Moorheilbad in Bad Zwischenahn, Niedersachsen, Northern Germany
Bad Zwischenahn is a spa town in the Ammerland district of Lower Saxony, situated on the lake Zwischenahner Meer, 15 km from Oldenburg and 70 km from the North Sea coast. During WW2, it was the home base of the largest Luftwaffe airbase in the North, which was heavily bombed and later converted to a golf course.
One of the local sights is a windmill from 1811 in Westerstede as part of a historical museum farm, featuring 14 houses and auxiliary buildings that were moved to this location to show rural life of the past. Major industries are tourism and health spas. Locally, smoked eels are a delicacy, particularly when served with the local schnapps called Ammerländer Löffeltrunk. There is a specific tradition to drink it from a tin spoon along with a special drinking cheer between hosts and guests. Beside drinking, the Ammerländer Löffeltrunk is also used to clean one’s hands after eating the smoked eel.
